Surge tanks play a vital role in the management of hydropower conveyance systems in pulp and paper facilities. To maintain their efficiency and ensure a safe work environment, NDT inspections of these tanks are essential. Avestec was hired to inspect surge tanks that were obstructed by trees on one side and posed potential asbestos contamination on the other.

The team utilized SKYRON to overcome the difficulties posed by the hazardous environment, conducting ultrasonic thickness testing on the tank shell. The pilot and inspector kept a safe distance from the trees and asbestos while taking the UT readings, guiding the flying robot with a camera as it flew over the trees and beyond their line of sight.

SKYRON successfully completed the inspections in a day, capturing 577 UT readings in less than an hour of flight time. The UT readings were taken without the coating thickness, allowing the client to quickly identify maintenance needs and anticipate future interactions through corrosion monitoring. Utilizing SKYRON proved to be a faster and more cost-effective solution than conventional methods, even in the presence of obstacles.
